Jelly fish warning

Portuguese man o'war

Malaga’s marine conservation foundation, Aula del Mar’ has warned the public of the appearance on the Costa del Sol of a number of Portuguese man o’war jellyfish.

Also known as the ‘floating terror’ these jellyfish have an air filled sack which allows them to drift on the sea’s surface but it is their long tentacles that can deal a very painful, and in some rare cases fatal, sting.

The Portuguese man o’war remains venomous even after death so avoid coming into contact with them if washed up on the beach.

Fortunately there are few people braving the waters at this time of the year so there are few reported injuries, although a beach in Huelva province was recently closed after some 200 ‘Carabela’ were washed up on the high tide.
