Estepona’s heritage department has begun the process of digitalisation of all the official records from the 19th century currently stored in the municipal archives.
Over the next two months some 10,000 boxes of documents will be scanned and stored online where they can be accessed through a website which is currently in development.
The objective is to create a permanent record of these paper document which could be damaged through the effects of ageing, etc.
The documents include records of local authority business, land registries, births, deaths and marriages, public census, etc. The records also cover such historic events as the War of Independence and other major events.
The scanning will be performed by a team of experts and the images will be treated to improve their clarity where necessary.
Once completed the images will be available to historians, council officers, and the general public.
Plans are also in hand to continue the process through the 20th C records and up to the current period in which all documents are now routinely scanned.
