In the latest regular Estepona town planning meeting, the council team will propose an amendment to the ordinance regulating the use and enjoyment of the beaches so that “La Morocha” becomes the first canine beach in Estepona .The councillor for the department of Resource Management, Pilar Fernández-Fígares, explained that the Council will release an area of 10,000 square metres so that pet owners can exercise their dogs on the beach and in the sea.

Fernández-Fígares stated this space, which is located between the beaches of ‘El Padrón’ and ‘El Castor’, has been made available in response to a request made by hundreds of local residents, who wanted a place where dogs could enjoy the beach all year round.

“Citizens increasingly demand more leisure spaces for their pets, and amending the ordinance gives us the possibility of seaside space for animals, “stressed Fernández-Fígares.To obtain permission from the regional administration, the Town Council will have to properly signpost the zone and specify times for its use. Also, the owners of these animals must monitor them to avoid inconvenience to others, pick up excrement produced by their pet and assume responsibility in case of them causing any damage.

Tourists appreciate being able to travel with their pets and find locations where owners and animals share leisure spaces. “In Estepona we are working so that pets have places where they can exercise and interact with other animals,” added the local official.

In this respect, Fernández-Fígare recalled that last September the first municipal dog park began operating with an area of 2,200 square metres, and is located adjacent to the park.

The work carried out by the local Council consisted of clearing the land on which grass was then planted and an irrigation system installed. An area with ponds was also created so that animals can swim and a pergola was installed to provide a shaded area.
The park is ideally suited for people with disabilities and also has waste bins, an area with drainage and an area with games such as rings, seesaws, mini-tunnels and steps to allow dogs to take physical exercise.
