Spanish police have detained two people in connection with an attempt to fraudulently claim the reward offered for the return of Madeleine McCann.

The couple, an Italian man and Portuguese woman, were arrested yesterday in Sotogrande as a result of a police investigation after the pair contacted Madeleine's parents to claim the reward.

Spanish police have pointed out that the couple are not suspected of having any involvement in the kidnapping itself.
