Q. What has a Scottish Clan got in common with Iberia?

A. Historically quite a lot!

The Clan Mac Dougall, one of the oldest Scottish clans, have discovered from recent research that lots of people living in Iberia, especially on the Costa del Sol, have surnames linked to the clan.
A Scottish Highland Clan event is being planned for Spain in the next 18 months and the Mac Dougalls want to hear from anyone in any part of Spain who has clan connection “ Our research has shown that at least a thousand people living in the Costa del Sol area have surnames which are connected with the clan”, said John Anderson Mc Dougall,  Director of the Clan Mc Dougall Society (Great Britain, Eire, Europe) “There are plans to hold a Scottish Clan Event on the Costa del Sol at a venue between Marbella and Estepona, in the next 18 months, which is why we are keen to contact as many of our clanfolk as possible”.

As well as the surname Mac Dougall, Mc Dougall, Dougall and all variety of spellings, other names with strong historical links to the clan include, Mac Dowell (and all different spellings), Mac Cowan, Cowie, Mac Eacherm and Livingston. There are also other surnames linked to the Mac Dougalls and you should visit the website www.clanmacdougall.co.uk to see if your name is connected to this royal clan.

The Mac Dougalls have historic family links with Scotland’s most famous medieval King, Robert the Bruce, whose heart was carried into battle on the Costa del Sol. Robert wanted his heart buried in the Holy Land and his closest friend, Lord Douglas set out with it in a casket. Douglas went to Spain and he was killed when fighting for King Alfonso in a battle against the Moors at Tebas de Ardales on March 25 1330. The Council of Tebas is establishing a Museum in Lord Douglas’s honour.

Douglas’s remains and Bruce’s heart in a casket were discovered after the battle and the casket, along with Douglas’s remains, were eventually returned to Scotland by the Spanish king.

Dougal, son of the great West Highland Royal Norse warrior, Somerled, established Clan Mac Dougall in 1100 The seat of the clan chief is the picturesque and ancient Dunollie Castle near Oban in Argyll.

Until the early 14th Century the Mac Dougalls were the most powerful family in the west of Scotland and the Isles, with many castles and large houses all over the area.
