The lengthy project to restore the main church of Casares is approaching a conclusion. The site, which occupies the high point on the castle mound overlooking the town, was visited recently by the Junta de Andalucia's Culture Minister, Rosa Torres, along with the Provincial Councillor for Culture, Francisco López, and the Mayor of Casares, Juan Sánchez García.
The restoration work which is now around 85% complete was begun in 2005 following an agreement between the Junta de Andalucia, Autopista del Sol, Concessionaria Española and the World Monuments Fund. Previous to this the building had been signed over to the Munipality of Casares by the Bishop of Malaga in November 2001. The project managers are seeking further funding from the Junta de Andalucia, to equip the interior of the building which once fully restored will be used as a cultural centre. So far the funding breaks down as follows: Casares Town Hall – 105,853 euros Ausol SA – 1,647,190 euros which represents a 1% cultural levy on the A7 toll road project for the section that passes through the municipality of Casares. Regional Culture Department - 6,010 euros There are a host of complementary projects including electrical installations, access, landscaping and so on which represent a further commitment by the local authorities of around a million euros.
