Antonio Barrientos, Mayor of Estepona

Officers of Spain's  Economic and Financial Crime (UDEF) police unit,  have arrested the Mayor of Estepona, Antonio Barrientos, a number of Councillors, and several local businessmen.

Barrientos was arrested at his home in Bahia Azul, which is now the subject of an exhaustive search. Of the other people arrested it is known that Francisco Zamorano, Councillor for Planning, and his brother in law Manuel Reina (Partido Estepona), along with municipal architect Arturo Cebrian are also being held for questioning

Officers have sealed off a number of Council offices this morning including the Town Hall and the Puertosol building which houses the planning and finance departments.

Codenamed "Operation Astapa" the action is the result of a two year investigation into bribery and corruption involving the re-classification of land by the Estepona authority, it was a similar offence which led to the arrest of former Mayor of Manilva, Pedro Tirado, some three years ago. According to the Spanish press police used phone taps to secure evidence against those accused.

The PSOE socialist party, which holds the balance of power in Estepona has already instigated proceedings to expell the Mayor, and those others arrested, from the Party.
