Last weekend’s I Rallye de tierra Andalucía-Benahavís part of the Campeonato de España de Rallyes de Tierra proved an exciting and memorable leg of the Spanish Rally Championship.
The suspense began on the first day when a meeting with the drivers led to the shortening of the rally due to reasons of safety, reducing it to eight sections from the original ten.
Race day was a long one with some eleven hours of action and right from the start the Mexican, Benito Guerra, took hold of the rally with both hands and led the race. This year’s Dakar winner Nani Roma wasn’t going to let him have it all his own way and mounted a strong challenge which proved successful as Guerro suffered a prop shaft failure dropping him to second place.
The final placings were:
First place – Nani Roma / Pilar Barceló (Mini Cooper) 51:32
2nd – Benito Guerra/Dani Cué (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo) a 1:05
3rd – Jorge del Cid/Helena Carrasco (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo) a 2:48
4th – Eduard Forés/David Usón (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo) a 4:01
5the – Amador Vidal/Francis Lema (VW Polo N1) a 4:35
