U18 – Bronze – Championship of Spain
Having qualified to enter the U18 Championship of Spain by winning the Championship of Andalucia, the U18 team travelled 12 hours on the bus to Valladolid at the weekend.
Their group was tricky as they had to face the 7 time winners CAU Valencia in the first round when ideally they would prefer to have met them in the final.
Saturday was an early start with the first match at 09.30hs against Getxo. This was not the best performance by Marbella and it appeared that they were still tired from their journey but they eventually eked out a 7-0 win with the try scored and converted by Alexander Cruz.
The next match was the vital one for Marbella to be able to get to the final as they faced the favourites and eventual Champions, CAU Valencia. Although they started well and went into the break 7-14 with Javier Garcia de la Peña scoring and Alexander Cruz converting, they were not able to score again and the eventual score was 7-29 to CAU Valencia.
On Sunday, after a good night’s sleep the team had another early start, so early the sprinklers were still on as the match was about the kick off. They faced Ourense in the final group match which was a must win in order to make the 3rd/4th play off.
Marbella did not hold back and eventually ran in 8 trys by Valentin Bianchi, Alexander Cruz, Oscar Garcia de la Peña (2), Jamie Ross, Nicolas Navone, Sam Parry and Christian King, with 6 conversions by Alexander Cruz to win 52-0.
The final match was the podium decider and the last match in a Marbella shirt for some of the second year players who would be leaving for university and other clubs. After an emotional pre-match huddle the team entered the playing field against a Madrid side, Liceo Frances.
Marbella started slowly as the nerves settled down and they gave away the first try to their opposition. This woke them up however and then Ryan Edwards (2), Christian King and Marco Spinetti scored with 4 conversions by Alexander Cruz to win 28-7 and proudly return home with the Bronze cup.
Squad: Oscar Garcia de la Peña, James Ross, Javier Garcia de la Peña, Pablo Caceres, Ryan Edwards, Manuel Silva, Marco Spinetti, Toby Francis, Henry Parry, Alexander Cruz, Enrique Bajo, Christian King, Sam Parry, Javier Ruiz, Augusto Nuñez, Eduardo Flores, Tomas Padin, Lewis Macrae, Nicolas Navone, Alexander Pflantz and Valentin Bianchi
Senior – Marbella Vs Blackheath
The Senior team were visited by Blackheath RFC on Saturday. The scheduled kickoff was at 14.00hs but the visitors had either got lost or not put their watches forward as they arrived over an hour late, just as the Marbella players were about to leave.
Eventually the match got underway and although no overall score was recorded, the visitors went home the winners.
