The 3rd DFAS de la Frontera Young Artists’ Competition 2012 reached its culmination on the evening of Friday 23rd March when, following a week’s public exhibition in the stunning gallery venue surrounding the San Roque Bullring, the winners were declared at a private reception attended by the students and their families, the teachers, dignitaries from the San Roque Ayuntamiento and, of course, members of DFAS de la Frontera.
Based on last year’s successful format 6 schools from the San Roque catchment area were invited to hold their own internal competitions and submit their winning entries to the DFAS de la Frontera sponsored public exhibition and prize giving. The schools in question were: IES Hosteleria, IES Carlos Castilla Del Pino, IES Jose Cadalso, IES Mar Del Sur, IES Sierra Almenara, and Sotogrande International School, who between them submitted 33 wonderful pieces; once again making the selection of the winners extremely difficult.
Two prizes were given; a €500 main Young Artists’ Prize decided upon by a judging panel made up of the heads of the participating schools, DFAS de la Frontera Chairman Peter Kirrage, Ian Le Breton from The Sovereign Group – our €150 Members’ Prize sponsor (based on online votes by members), Uruguayan artist Nestor Plada and Chinese artist Lily Du.
Eventually the votes were added up and finally, after much debate, the judges reached a decision and the winners were declared.
The main Young Artists’ Prize went to 17 year old Elena Mico with her brilliant acrylic on canvas ‘Road After Rain’, and The Sovereign Group Sponsored Members’ Prize went to another talented 17 year old, Elizabeth Waterous, with her evocative painting ‘Alhambra’.
Both girls are students at Sotogrande International School who have now taken the crown from IES Jose Cadalso which provided both of last year’s winners.
None of this could take place without help, support, and hard work and DFAS de la Frontera would particularly like to thank their friends at the San Roque Ayuntamiento, the judges, and last but not least Young Artists’ Competition organizer Christine Hodgson, who made it all happen.
