As the weather warms up and we reach for cooling drinks, here is a word of warning. Researchers at Harvard University estimate that soft drinks are killing about 180,000 adults every year around the world. Although they are never cited as the cause, soft drinks cause and escalate diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
According to other research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition last year, drinking a can a day doubles your risk of stroke, cancer and heart problems compared with someone who drinks nothing but water and fruit juices.
Diet colas and sodas aren’t any better. The artificial sweeteners like aspartame also have serious health implications.
So when you’re looking to quench your thirst, try some fresh watermelon juice, or my favourite which is water with sliced cucumber, grated ginger and fresh mint.
